Responsibilities Within limits of delegated authority, the Close Protection Officer, FS-5, may be responsible for the following duties:
• Maintains security coverage for the working office and personal residence of the Senior UN Official;
• Ensures that mitigating measures are in place at all time to deter or
deny identified threat and to preserve the security, safety and
wellbeing of the Senior UN Officials;
• Ensures that continued
effectiveness of the close protection team remains in relation to the
changes of the local threat level;
• Accompanies the Senior UN Official during official travels and coordinates all related security requirements;
• Conducts pre-deployment briefings with the Close Protection Officers
and coordinates with the staff in the office of the Senior UN Official
under the Close Protection Team Leader (CPTL). Provides guidance on
changes that might occur whilst on duty;
• Deploys CP officers, in advance, for official moves to ensure implementation of security arrangements;
• Maintains continuing lines of communication with security focal points and other UN or non-UN stake holders;
• Briefs the CSO or CPTL on the status, activity and requirements of the unit;
• Identifies gaps in existing capability and make recommendation for amendment where necessary;
Contributes to the planning process of protective services for Senior UN Officials, as necessary;
• Drafts Statements of Requirement and provides technical specifications for the procurement of section security equipment;
• Inspects Security equipment and ensures minimum equipment
requirements are maintained and deployed in accordance with relevant
policy;
Performs other duties as required.

• Security personnel operating in the mission’s area of responsibility;
• Personnel from Military and Civilian Police Components of the field mission;
• Project Managers and other personnel;
• Host Government officials and local law enforcement personnel

system capable to enable the conduct of United Nations activities while
ensuring the safety, security and well-being of personnel and the
security of United Nations premises and assets.

Education
• High school diploma or equivalent technical or vocational certificate
• A valid driver’s license is required
• UN DSS Close Protection Operators Certification (CPOC) is highly
desirable and will be expected for future advancement in this field)
• UNDSS Close Protection Supervisor Certification (CPSC) is highly
desirable (and will be expected for future advancement in this field)
• UN DSS certification in any of the following is an asset: Security
Certification Program, Security Analysis Practice and Process, Hostage
Incident Management, Security Investigation.
Work Experience
• A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in the military, police or security management is required.
• A minimum five years within the last eight years of progressively
responsible experience in close protection with a national, private or
international security organization is required.
• A minimum two
years within the last three years of experience in close protection
management at least at the level of a close protection shift leader with
a national, private or international security organization is required.
• At least one year within the last two years’ experience in close
protection operations at the international level and in a conflict or a
post-conflict environment is required.
• Experience and proficiency
in the use of close protection weapons, communications, surveillance
equipment and vehicles is required.
Languages
Fluency in
one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French,
(both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official
language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
